Selfless pastoral care given by Townsville Good Sam Sister Margaret Lyons has been acknowledged in her being presented with the Mark Mappas award.

The Townsville Diocesan Parents and Friends Association annually confers awards on parents and teachers who make outstanding contributions to pastoral care in their schools.

This year, Sister Margaret received the award for her long and devoted years of care within the St Margaret Mary’s College community and with its Japanese exchange students programme.  The prestigious award is given in memory of Mr Mark Mappas, a parent who made an exceptional contribution in the Ingham region of north Queensland.  His wife was at the presentation.

The following citation accompanied the award:

“Sr Margaret celebrated 50 years of service in 2004 as a Good Samaritan Nun, and her association with the school goes back to 1955 when she taught at the school.   Her vocation took her to Japan where she spent the next 25 years immersing herself in the Japanese culture, language and way of life, an experience which has left a life-lasting impression on this very humble woman.

“In 1982 she returned to the college and would visit all the families of the newly enrolled Year 8 students.  It is clear to see that this was the beginning of a very good pastoral system which the college prides itself on today.

“Through her voluntary work, Sr Margaret Lyons has contributed in such a selfless way to the care of college families, our Japanese exchange student program and the School Board, and we thank God for blessing us with Sr Margaret Lyons in our school community.

“Thank you Sr Margaret for all your hard work and dedication in maintaining St Margaret’s College as a School of Quality Catholic Education.”
